A conversation

Q: "So, are you decorating the nursery? Do you have a theme?"

A: "Yes, our theme is 'we don't have any fucking money.'"

IFers, we live on another planet. I couldn't care less about a nursery. We couldn't really manage to pay for a redecoration to last a year or two anyway. I just want a child.

Still chuckling at your theme.

I completely agree. Frankly, a nursery to me is a waste of money and energy - I'd rather just leave the room mostly undecorated until the kid is old enough to have preferences of their own. And it sounds like you have your priorities completely straight.

Amen, sister. LOVE the theme - you could go a lot of directions with that!

(If you really want to pursue Hard Times decor, of course, you *could* post pictures of the room that will be the nursery, and your penny-pinching bloggy friends could come up with fun things to do that don't cost money...but then, that might run contrary to the "I don't care about the nursery" principle.)

The baby's not going to care either. ; )

Nursery, what nursery? I live in a one bedroom apt. Bassinet will be in my bedroom, changing table in the living room. It'll be okay for a year or two.

I am SOO glad you are having a child :) and if the nursery dosen't matter, then it dosen't matter, babies can sleep in freakin dresser drawers and be happy :) really all they need is the boob, some love and a few clothes!

(but the swing has saved my sanity a few nights!!! hee hee )

Amen.

My SIL is pregnant and can't stop going on about the baby's room. I want to choke her. She doesn't get it. It is about so much more than a nursery.

I remember the first year of TTC and spending so much time picking out nursery sets for a boy or girl. Then all the money I've spent on IF. Good thing I realized that I don't care about that stuff anymore.

Before we got incredibly lucky and moved out of our mini apartment, we went to a fabric store and bought 2 yards of cool (and sale) fabric and covered some cardboard boxes with it for toy and clothes storage and put a square on the wall behind the crib. You can have lots of fun decorating for practically no money if and when you decide you want to.

Of course, there's also the fact that my immigrant in-laws came to see our mini apartment and exclaimed in joy that it was perfect for raising a child "Because they will really feel the need to study hard and get out of here!" So you can always go that route.

Our theme is the room with the crib/laundry/ vaccum cleaner in it.

Oooooo...that sounds like the theme of OUR nursery with my son!!!! Seriously, we got our crib and rocking chair/ottoman at a garage sale, used leftover furniture from my childhood as a dresser and changing table. No pottery barn kids for us. Plus, they grow out of it so quickly!

I agree! The cost that some people sink into decorating the nursery is crazy. Babies don't need "themes"! It's like something I read recently, about a mom seeking a theme for her son's first birthday party. When did all of this happen? Ugh!

For our future nursery, we want a safe crib, a little bookshelf (something he or she can reach) and a dresser. I might look for a wall decoration of some kind -- etsy has some great ideas, and I like supporting independent crafters.

I'm not worried about a nursery either. DH and I were thinking of painting, but now we've decided to wait until "the boys" are older and can pick out their paint colors like Phoebe did. We did however, decide to have a theme of Dr. Seuss, like they have at the Pottery Barn Kids store. We figured it would be mostly primary colors and people didn't have to get things from that store. My niece made two quilts that are amazing for their room!!! She traced pictures from Dr. Seuss books for the main blocks using fabric pens and used primary colors for the other quilt blocks. It's amazing!!!!

so true. i didn't do a thang that suggested a baby was on the way.
nor spent any money beforehand.
i waited to get stuff like a stroller and car seat more than a week after he was born.

and the whole nursery crap depresses me. wait and struggle all that time for a kid and you're going to stick him in another room??!! nuh-uh. i still can't let him go!

Weird, that's our theme too!
