This Weekend...

My parents drove up to come to the singing group's big spring concert. They came the second night and it was a bit rough: I have to admit it, I was a tad embarrassed by some of the hams in our group. I like to sing, and I think songs make for a good evening's entertainment, without any fancy-pants whistles and bells. Just make the music really good, and give the audience enough info so they can appreciate the songs' context (as much of our repertoire isn't in English). But some folks like to be on stage for its own sake. It irritates me.

Then, yesterday morning, my dad told me that he has cancer. It's early stage, very localized, and a common probles, so there are lots of treatment options, should the first line of attack fail. But it makes me really sad. The sweet man, he didn't want to burden me with something he didn't feel all that worried about. He wasn't taking the whole thing artificially lightly, but he knows he'll make it through this one. I feel strongly that he will, too.

Even without the "will he die?" question--I mean, my father will leave us eventually--it makes me so sad to think of him suffering. Even if it's only medications and a minor outpatient procedure. I've always been so close to my dad, and he has been such a good guide to me. So, basically, the point of all this is I'm very sad.

Oh honey, I am so sorry to hear about your dad. It is so hard to hear news like that, even if the person who has it doesn't feel particularly worried. You worry for them no matter what. My mom had a health scare last year and they waited to tell me (I was on business travel). When they did tell me, I was a wreck, although she turned out fine.

It is also so hard to think that someone you love is suffering - but, you never know. He may genuinely have a pretty easy time of it. Let him guide you on how things are going and how easy it may actually be.

I'm giving you a big hug, always.

Oh, (((hugs))). I too worry about my parents getting sick, especially since I don't live close by to be there for them. Even if the prognosis is good, you just wish that nobody had to go through all that. I hope the coming weeks bring good news!

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. it's so hard dealing with family illness. I'm hoping they've caught it early and he fully recovers without harm. still, it's difficult to see and deal with his suffering and those who love him. wishing him all the best for quick healing. ~luna

i'm sending you big, big hugs for you and your dad.

both my parents (crazy as they are) never tell me if they are having health issues because they're afraid that i'll not be able to handle it. it seems to go both ways since we haven't told them about our IF woes. my dad also refuses to go to the doctor which worries me constantly since he's in his early 60's.

at least your pop is lucky that he was diagnosed in the early stages...

I am so sorry to read about your sweet dad. What terrible news. I know what you mean- even if it is not an advanced stage, it is difficult to see someone you love go through something like that. Sending you lots of good thoughts your way-- Dot

Ugh. What difficult news to get. It's hard to imagine how fragile our parents really are when announcements like that happen. Especially when you're close to them. I really can relate to that feeling, especially these last few months after my Dad's heart attack and open heart surgery.

Big HUGS to you ... and to your Dad, too!

I came over from Io's blog. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I've had to deal with a cancer diagnosis with my dad twice now (once prostate cancer- easy to treat and over and done with quickly, and then colon cancer last year, which was removed quickly, but required some chemotherapy). And then there was the heart disease diagnosis and quintuple bypass between those two cancers, and then a second heart surgery to re-open some of the bypasses more recently...

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to comment to say that I've been there and I'm sorry you have to deal with it, even if it is an easily treatable cancer. Facing the illness or mortality of a parent is no easier, even knowing (like we all do) that they will, of course, die eventually. I'm sorry that you're sad.

I am about to have a very embarrassing musical experience, though for very different reasons than you- I am playing with a quintet this semester, and the two "stars"- the violin and french horn- have not practiced enough. As the second violist, there is very little I can do to redirect the group when the two stars begin to falter, so I'm not sure why I'm concerned about it. I'm not even a music student anymore- I'm just a staff member filling in a part on this oddly voiced Mozart quintet, so it's not like I'll get a bad grade or something. It's just irritating, like you said. We perform twice this week- once at the french horn players junior recital and once at a chamber orchestra concert. Wish me luck (and hope for a miracle for the two stars!)...

Very, very hard news to hear and I'm sure that you're able to focus only on that scariest of words. I'm thinking of you and your family.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry for this news! It is so hard to watch someone we love suffer, and to feel so helpless about it. I will hope for the best for your dad.
